CANDIDATE PROFILE: Jennifer Voignier

Jennifer Voignier
Jennifer Voignier
Republican – Town Council At-Large

How long have you been a resident of Clarksville?: 13 Years
Occupation: Chief Business Officer for the Wilson Education Service Center
Education: Silver Creek High School (1986); Indiana Vocational Technical College (1994) – Business Management; Indiana University Southeast (2012) – Criminology and Criminal Justice; University of Notre Dame (2019) – Certification in Grant Proposal Writing
Previously held elected office: At-Large Town Council – 2 Terms

Why did you decide to run for this office?
“It’s my time to give back to the community. While raising my three children as a single mom, the community helped us. I struggled a few years and always said I would pay it forward. I believe my education, honesty and transparency make me who I am today. I will give back to my community by serving the people who served me until God feels my time serving is complete.“

What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing the Town of Clarksville, and what would you do to address it if elected?
“Everyday has its challenges. I am not sure if one is bigger than the other. We are currently land-locked and that gives us little to no room to expand. We have very little industrial, medical or business offices, like you see in our surrounding communities. Development is nearly null, although redevelopment has greater potential. We should analyze our current uses for blighted buildings and properties and redevelop them into usable spaces. Possibly create a space that is unique that not only appeals to our youth but attracts people throughout any age.”

What are your goals for the office?
“When re-elected, I would like for this council to work bi-partisan, as a team. Vision and transparency are missing and I intend to bring that forward. Vision for our future as a town. Vision for our residents. Vision for our visitors. One should be able to have a goal, to seek that goal and be very clear about that goal. I would like to see a team whose vision matches that of our residents, visitors, and our town as a whole.”

What experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the position?
“My experience as a councilmember currently and the only woman to be re-elected to the Council. I work hard for you and I work with our neighboring communities in forming relationships to better each of us. I am a committee member of both the Jeffersonville Flood Control Board and the Clark County Recycling Board. I have been a member of the Planning and Zoning Board and am a current member of the Redevelopment Commission. I take pride in what I do for Clarksville.”

What do you think is the most important skill someone needs to fill the office you are running for?
“Listen, Comprehend and make Decisions. One must listen to those around them; neighbors, community, town employees, those seeking to provide services, and comprehend what is being stated or presented. With that understanding and your own ethics, you will make decisions that will be responsible for changing the lives of those that live in our Town.”

What distinguishes you from your opponent?
“I am a trustworthy woman with strong work ethics. I am passionate about helping others and I care about the people who live in Clarksville, their needs, wants and desires. I want to help provide for our town, a place where our children and grandchildren feel safe and secure, where families can gather, love and laugh, and where visitors continue to come back again and again. I am knowledgeable about how the government works and I feel I bring a sense of organization to the table to get things done.”

If there was one thing that you could change about the Town of Clarksville, what would it be?
“It is hard to pick only one thing to change. Remove the Theater X building forever and the sign above it or maybe restore Colgate to its origins or maybe fix the eroding river front or maybe bring back the Clark Cabin or maybe involve our youth and schools more often than we do now so that they are seen more for the good they do or maybe remove our blighted buildings and properties from our landscape. There are many things one may like to see change, but of each of those things, change must and will occur in due time.”
