CANDIDATE PROFILE: Janne Newland

Janne Newland
Janne Newland
Democrat – Town Council At-Large

How long have you been a resident of Clarksville?: 40 Years
Occupation: Payments Manager for Paramount Management Group
Education: Clarksville High School (1995); Indiana University Southeast – Political Science; Sullivan University – Business Management
Previously held elected office: District 2 Clark County Council – 1 Term

Why did you decide to run for this office?
“When I first ran for county council in 2018 it was because I wanted to ensure working class people were not being overlooked during the extensive growth that was happening throughout the county. During my tenure I gained valuable knowledge and experience in working with my fellow council members, county officials and employees as well as budgets and ordinances. I think my passion and skills could serve the town well.“

What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing the Town of Clarksville, and what would you do to address it if elected?
“I believe Clarksville’s biggest challenge is affordable housing. While we have seen a recent surge in multi-family developments to offer additional options, the rent prices are still out of reach for many hard-working families. I would like to shift our focus more towards affordable single-family homes by using the revised residential building ordinance to allow for smaller homes in the R-2 zone. I believe this could help usher in the next generation of homeowners to Clarksville.”

What are your goals for the office?
“My goals for the office would be to expand affordable housing, improvements to neighborhood roads and drainage, scale up parks and green spaces, and foster more engagement with residents to receive their input on developments and projects that directly affect their daily life.”

What experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the position?
“I bring my experience serving on the county council as well as professional experience working with budgets, contracts and process improvements. I also serve on the board of directors for Community Action of Southern Indiana and a member of the finance and process & planning committees.”

What do you think is the most important skill someone needs to fill the office you are running for?
“I think one of the most important skills or attributes for any elected office is humility. You have to be willing to put your ego aside so you can effectivly collaborate with the other council members, town employees, our police, fire & EMS and surrounding municipalities. Remembering that you are elected to serve your town and constituents, not your own self interests is key to being a successful public servant.”

What distinguishes you from your opponent?
“I believe my previous experience serving on the county council, my current position on the board of CASI, and my professional knowledge in finance and process improvements would bring a unique skill set to the town council.”

If there was one thing that you could change about the Town of Clarksville, what would it be?
“I would like Clarksville to devote more efforts toward small business development as opposed to big box retail. While these corporate businesses do offer a certain level of convenience and jobs, far too often we see them close or move to the next hot spot of town, leaving behind empty buildings and parking lots that become harder and harder to fill.”
