CANDIDATE PROFILE: Greg Hertzsch

Greg Hertzsch
Greg Hertzsch
Libertarian – Town Council District 1

How long have you been a resident of Clarksville?: 23 Years
Occupation: Shipping Assistant at Vivid Impact LLC
Education: Indiana University Southeast (1993) – A.S. Degree in Computer Science
Previously held elected office: None
Endorsements: Libertarian Party of Indiana

Why did you decide to run for this office?
“Over the years the council has neglected the concerns of the residents of our fine town. Their use of eminent domain on homes near the river, their eviction of residents of America Place hotel, their battle against Theater X to name a few examples are some of the issues in which I’d have voted opposite the prevailing vote.“

What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing the Town of Clarksville, and what would you do to address it if elected?
“The biggest challenge is keeping Clarksville affordable for everyday working citizens. The razing of older homes and building all of the shiny new development near the river may sound wonderful on the surface, but it will make it difficult for working class folks who have been our backbone for years to remain here. What would I do if elected? I’d start by not being a rubber stamp and voting No, No, No when necessary.”

What are your goals for the office?
“To help get the town council completely out of the real estate business. Just imagine that scenario. To stop the ongoing war against Theater X and to overturn previous enacted laws against them and their business. Chances are they are not directly harming you the reader, and nobody is forcing you to go there. Live and let live is my philosophy, and I’d like to make it the philosophy of the town council.”

What experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the position?
“I have served as the District 9 Representative on the Central Committee of the Libertarian Party of Indiana from 2004 until 2023. I am currently the Region 3 Alternate on the Libertarian Party National Committee.”

What do you think is the most important skill someone needs to fill the office you are running for?
“To be a good listener of the people you represent to understand their concerns. To be principled about your core beliefs. To understand and appreciate the role of limited government in the lives of all citizens of Clarksville..”

What distinguishes you from your opponent?
“My incumbent opponent supports the use of government in areas I mentioned above whereas I support freedom. No doubt we want many of the same things. I trust the free market more so than he on both economic and social issues.”

If there was one thing that you could change about the Town of Clarksville, what would it be?
“Quite simply to let residents live however they want as long as they do not infringe upon the negative rights, person, and property of others.”
