CLARKSVILLE, IN (August 24, 2022) – A major construction project, which required the closure of Clarksville’s Lincoln Drive, will take longer than previously expected. The Clarksville Wastewater Department is currently working with contractors to replace a 20-year-old pump station with a new gravity system. Much of the work includes digging extremely deep trenches in which to lay the new pipes.
Project managers put out a timeline for the project earlier this year, but the work is taking longer than expected. Utilities Director Brittany Montgomery says there are two main reasons for the delay. The first being the appearance of a sinkhole in the roadway on Clarksville’s Marriott Drive near Derby Dinner Playhouse. Montgomery says the crews working on the Lincoln Drive project had to be pulled from that site to complete emergency repairs to Marriott Drive.
The second cause of the delays is the depth at which crews must dig to lay the new pipes on Lincoln Drive. Crews are being forced to dig more than 40 feet deep in some areas, which is taking much longer than expected.
“We understand that residents in the area would like Lincoln Drive open as soon as possible,” said Montgomery. “However, digging a trench at these depths can be very dangerous, so we want to make sure our crews are taking the necessary time to complete the work safely.”
Montgomery says she is thankful for residents’ patience and understanding as the Town of Clarksville works to complete this very important project. A project which will provide overall better service to area residents once it is completed.
As for the continued road closures, project managers have released an updated timeline, although they stress that these dates are estimated and subject to change. Residents with questions about the project can contact the Wastewater Department at utilitybilliing@townofclarksville.com.
