CLARKSVILLE, IN (February 1, 2024) – Drivers may notice a big difference when traveling down Veterans Parkway in Clarksville.  The site which once served as home to Clarksville’s Red Robin restaurant has been completely demolished to make way for a new WaWa gas station.  The site is located at 1354 Veterans Parkway in front of Lowe’s.  Before being developed into a Red Robin location, the site was home to a Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant.

In early 2023, officials from WaWa approached the Town of Clarksville about the possibility of building a new gas station at the site, but soon learned a zoning variance would be needed to proceed with the project.  The variance was approved by the Clarksville Board of Zoning Appeals and a development plan was approved by the Planning Commission just a few months later.

The WaWa chain is an east coast staple offering made-to-order sandwiches, fresh salads, smoothies, pizza, and coffee.  The Clarksville location is expected to include several gas pumps and up to eight EV charging stations.  Construction is expected to take about 9 months.  The company says the store will create 35-40 new jobs.

The company hosted a news conference back in Fall 2023 to announce six new locations in and around Louisville as well as the new location in Clarksville.  According to a story from WDRB News, the chain says it plans to open about 40 stores across the Kentucky region in the next 8-10 years.  They also announced planned investments in Indiana and Ohio.

About WaWa
Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, PA in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is your all day, every day stop for freshly prepared foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services and surcharge-free ATMs. Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington, D.C. The stores offer a large fresh foodservice selection, including Wawa brands such as custom prepared hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, specialty beverages and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks. Forbes.com Ranks Wawa as #29 of America’s Largest Private Companies in 2021 and #12 on Forbes 100 Halo List in 2022.
