CLARKSVILLE, IN (April 4, 2022) – Clarksville residents will notice some changes to their summer Wastewater bills.  In March, the Clarksville Town Council approved the creation of a new WaterSmart Meter Savings Program.

For the past few years, the ‘Summer Sprinkling Program’ has provided discounts to Clarksville residents who use more than average amounts of water during the summer months.  That extra water use is traditionally needed to fill backyard pools or water lawns during the summer heat.  Since that water was not going into the Clarksville sewer system to be treated, the Wastewater Department provided an automatic discount to residents on their summer Wastewater bills.  The discount was determined using a formula that takes into account the amount of water normally used by a resident during the rest of the year.

Since the ‘Summer Sprinkling Program’ was scheduled to end in 2021, the Town Council voted to replace it with the new WaterSmart Meter Savings Program.  To participate, residents must visit the Wastewater Department located inside Town Hall, and purchase a detachable water meter that connects to their home’s exterior water spigot.  Residents can then track their water usage and report it to the Wastewater Department by emailing a photo of the meter reading.  Although this new system requires some effort on the part of the homeowner, Town officials say the program can save homeowners even more than the old program.  Rather than just getting a discount in the summer months, this new program allows residents to receive the discount all year long.  Residents have the option of reporting their water usage every month, or once a year.  Once a meter reading is submitted, the discount will appear on the resident’s next bill.

The WaterSmart Meter Savings Program is optional, so residents may choose not to participate.  Since this is the first year of the program, the Town of Clarksville is offering a 50% discount on the meters.  Meters can be purchase at the Wastewater Department in Town Hall for just $65.00.  Starting in 2023, the meters will be sold for the full price of $130.00.  The Wastewater Department will also be offering extended hours on certain days to sell those meters.
