Associate Planner Kaylie Malloy recently represented the Clarksville Planning and Zoning Department as a featured speaker on an Environmental Alumni Panel hosted by Bellarmine University.
During the panel discussion, Malloy spoke about her time as a student at Bellarmine and how her academic experience helped prepare her for a career in local government planning. She shared how the environmental principles and planning strategies she studied have translated into real world applications in Clarksville, particularly as the Town continues to look for ways to grow responsibly while protecting natural resources.
One of the initiatives Malloy highlighted was Clarksville’s work toward earning designation through SolSmart. SolSmart is a national program that recognizes communities for making it faster, easier, and more affordable for residents and businesses to install solar energy systems. The program provides guidance to local governments on improving permitting processes, reducing unnecessary barriers to solar development, and updating planning practices to support renewable energy investment.
By working toward SolSmart designation, Clarksville is taking steps to become a more solar friendly community. This includes reviewing local ordinances, streamlining permitting procedures, and increasing public access to information about solar energy options. Receiving a SolSmart designation signals that the Town is committed to sustainable growth and is actively preparing for future energy needs by supporting clean and renewable infrastructure.
Malloy discussed how these types of efforts not only benefit the environment but also position Clarksville as a forward thinking community that is open to innovation and long term planning. Her work reflects the Town’s broader commitment to balancing economic development with environmental responsibility.
Opportunities like the Bellarmine Environmental Alumni Panel allow professionals such as Malloy to share their experiences and highlight how the next generation of planners can bring sustainable solutions back to the communities they serve. Clarksville is proud to support staff members who continue to advocate for thoughtful planning and environmental stewardship throughout Southern Indiana.
