Members of the Town Council and staff recently joined community partners to celebrate a major milestone for one of Southern Indiana’s leading regional organizations. The evening marked 50 years of service by SoInTourism and offered a chance to reflect on the growth that has shaped Clarksville and the surrounding region over the past five decades.
As one of the oldest American towns in the Northwest Territory, Clarksville has long played an important role in the story of Southern Indiana. Founded in 1783 by George Rogers Clark, the town served as an early launching point for settlers moving westward beyond the original colonies. Its location along the Ohio River made it a natural gateway for exploration, trade, and expansion into the frontier, placing Clarksville at the center of the nation’s early westward movement.
Today, that same riverfront location continues to welcome visitors who are drawn to the area’s parks, shopping destinations, and scenic views. Tourism has helped drive economic development throughout the community, supporting local businesses and highlighting the quality of life that residents enjoy every day.
Organizations like SoInTourism have worked for decades to promote Clarksville and neighboring communities as places to visit, explore, and invest in. Their efforts have helped showcase regional attractions such as the Falls of the Ohio State Park, as well as local dining, retail, and cultural experiences that make Southern Indiana unique.
The anniversary celebration served as both a look back and a look ahead. Community leaders, tourism partners, and municipal staff gathered to recognize the partnerships that have strengthened the region’s economy while sharing a common appreciation for the place so many are proud to call home.
Clarksville is fortunate to be part of a growing Southern Indiana community that values its history while continuing to move forward. Celebrating milestones like this is a reminder of how far the region has come and the shared efforts that continue to make it a destination for visitors and residents alike.
